Timber Framing
Timber from sustainable sources provides a renewable building material that takes in carbon from the atmosphere while growing and stores it for the life of the building. Its greatest enemy is the termite, although rot and mould from condensation are becoming an increasingly critical threat as we seal our homes and increase insulation levels.
At SNG Engineers, we have several years of experience in designing and documenting all different timber framing elements to current Australian Standards.
Types of Timber Framing Design Services Provided by SNG Engineers
TIMBER FLOOR FRAMING
Timber floor framing usually consists of timber bearers and joists supported on a combination of walls and/or stumps (steel or timber). Sometimes, depending on the span and load, the timber bearers are replaced by steel beams.
TIMBER WALL FRAMING
Timber wall frames are typically either 90mm or 70mm deep with 35mm or 45mm thick studs at 450mm or 600mm spacing. Noggins (spacers) are inserted between studs to provide lateral support. Top and bottom plates are the typically same size as studs and can be doubled depending on the load or the spacing of the supporting members.
TIMBER ROOF FRAMING
Timber roof framing usually consists of the roof beams, rafters, trusses, lintels etc. The trussed roof is fairly simple and usually designed by the truss manufacturer and supplier. The Pitched roof requires rafters, hip rafters, collar-ties, etc to be designed and is more expensive than trussed roof due to the extra labour required in fabrication.
